Most HOAs follow best practices and rely on hard working directors to ensure projects get done right and on budget. I think there's room for improvement here. Now more than ever, we need to address deferred maintenance and start holding vendors accountable when they don't deliver what they promise.

Competitive Bidding
Vendor Accountability
Most projects lack competitive bids, especially large ones. The current view that soliciting bids alienates vendors and harms our reputation is not a best practice and raises the cost of doing business for owners.
When vendors don't deliver what they promise, the Board and Management need to represent owner interests and push back. That starts with contracts don't favor a vendor, not just one-sided quotes.
Homeowner Input
Transparency
Owner participation at meetings is near an all-time low. More contracts are now discussed and approved at secret meetings, or on a consent calendar without debate than ever before. I think adding or removing amenities without owner input is also not a good practice.
Past boards included more informative descriptions in meeting notices; provided more details in minutes; held town hall meetings for the budget or controversial topics; posted all contacts on the Owner Portal; and encouraged owners to share concerns with directors. I support these things.
